The ultimate sign of natural beauty and youthfulness, freckles always look better when they're embraced. Whether you have year-round speckles or just a few sun-kissed spots, freckles have the power to give you that sexy-without-trying-too-hard look, one the fashion world is beginning to celebrate.
Freckles make everything else you do, whether it's an oxblood lip or blue shadow, seem a little bit more effortless, so its no wonder that faux freckles have been popping up on the spring runways at Alexander McQueen, Prabal Gurung, and Isabel Marant to complement that no-makeup, makeup look for summer.
Since summer weather is just around the corner, and the sun happens to be one of the many preservers of freckles, we've put together 8 tricks that will help you enhance your skin while maintaining your beauty marks. Don't have freckles? That's about to change!
SLATHER ON SPF
Slathering on sunscreen in the hot summer weather is the most important thing you can do for your sun-kissed spots. People who freckle also tend to get a lot more age spots and sun spots, so applying a daily dose of sunscreen before you begin your beauty routine will help protect those small spots from morphing into darker and larger sun spots in the future. Opt for a daily moisturizer with SPF for ultimate moisture and protection.
SKIP THE CONTOUR CRAZE
While it may be difficult to accept that some of the most coveted beauty trends just don't work for certain skin types, there are other ways for freckled beauties to play up their features. The contour craze is risky business for those with freckles because it's such a cosmetic-heavy technique that hides your natural beauty.
If you want to show off your freckles, instead, try the strobing or highlighting technique, and subtly coat your cheekbones with a liquid illuminator to sculpt your face naturally without hiding those coveted sun-kissed spots.
LIGHTEN UP YOUR FOUNDATION
Freckles are no match for dark, heavy foundation. While it's fine to use foundation to deal with redness or to cover up problem areas on your skin, the formula shouldn't interfere with your skin's texture or wipe out your freckles. Since summer is no time for heavy foundation anyways, opt for a light BB cream or tinted moisturizer and apply it only where you need coverage.
The key to letting your freckles shine through? Make sure the cream or foundation that you choose matches the lighter skin in between the darker beauty marks, or you'll end up with an uneven skin tone.
CUT DOWN ON CONCEALER
Not only will concealer hide your youthful sun-kissed spots, it looks obvious and unnatural against freckled skin, creating that unwanted, cakey look. If you feel you can't get away with less concealer, use a sheer formula, or mix it with a little moisturizer to thin out the formula for more natural-looking skin.
OPT FOR A BRIGHT BLUSH
What can look more youthful than skin filled with freckles and a bright coloured blush? Freckles look extra fresh under a wash of bright pink or coral blush, so don't be afraid to go all out when it comes to picking a shade for the summer. Stay away from brown or warm coloured blush palettes that will blend with your freckles and make your face look muddy.
For the perfect amount of colour, use a bright lipstick shade of pink or coral, and place a small dab of colour onto the apples of your cheeks. Rub the colour into your skin gently with your finger tips for a natural-looking flush.
Don't have freckles of your own? Thanks to brow and eye pencils, you can fake it! To create the most realistic-looking spots, use two different shades of brown pencil to tap the colour over the bridge of your nose and over your cheekbones. The quicker you do it, the better. The unevenness of the spots will make your faux freckles look au naturale. Finish off by setting your new spots with a light dusting of translucent powder.
