Choppy bangs, buzz cuts, and bobs may have ruled the spring 2016 runways, but there is one long-haired look that will always stay on-trend: beachy waves. Known for complimenting the facial structures of surfer chicks and genetically blessed long-haired beauties, beachy waves offer a natural, carefree style that proves perfect when paired with shorts and logo tee for the ultimate cool-girl summer look. The twist? These natural looking waves are not always so naturally achieved.
Perfecting the art of the beach wave often must come with a lot of time, patience, product, and a really great curling or flat iron. For a casual day at the beach, this isn't always ideal. But because the style is so versatile, beach waves are often coveted for their sultry, evening appropriate look, as well.
To help you achieve the perfect summer beach waves (and gain some serious hair inspiration), we're taking a look at celebs who have mastered the art of beachy waves, and adding a few tips on how to achieve them for yourself!
STARS WHO HAVE MASTERED THE BEACH WAVE
Whether it's a slight wave or blunt curl, the beach wave has proven to be a celeb favourite in all of its many forms. While stars like Selena Gomez and Shay Mitchell prefer soft, voluminous curls created with a curling iron, L'Oreal muses Blake Lively and Karlie Kloss favour messy, natural-looking waves. To achieve this look, curl your hair with a wide barrel curling iron, and scrunch it with L'Oreal's Matt & Messy spray to achieve the tousled effect.
For a few seasons now, the seventies trend has come back to remind us of how much we adore the feminine, yet liberating beauty that comes with long beachy waves. Actress, singer and brunette beauty Vanessa Hudgens recently tried her hand at the look, stepping out with extra large, tight curls that looked as wild and free as the era they came from. If your hair resembles Vanessa's curls, run an oil product or serum through your hair to tame it without "breaking" the curls.
If your hair is stiff or slightly wavy, use a a medium barrel curling iron to create tighter curls for a more structured beach look. Run your hands through your hair or gently brush through to loosen up the curls creating a more natural appeal. If you'd rather avoid heat all together, simply braid your hair before bed, sleep on it, and unravel it in the morning to create natural damage-free beach waves!
