With all of the unique and futuristic takes on hairstyle trends popping up in the beauty world over the past few months, coming up with a fresh new way to style your hair can seem all the more difficult. That's when we look to young, stylish stars like Pretty Little Liars' actress Shay Mitchell when searching for beauty inspiration. When it comes to dressing for the red carpet, the actress never fails to impress with her glamorous, game-changing fashion and beauty looks that have us feeling some serious style envy.
This was also the case at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards, where Shay wore a gorgeous gold and silver sequin Roberto Cavalli gown – one of her best looks yet! She complimented the gown with a brown smoky eye and a high chignon that appeared perfectly simple and elegant from the front, yet edgy and daring from the back.
The chignon came adorned with multiple gold rings that sat along the back of her head, working their way up to meet the chignon at the top of her head. Accessorizing your top knot or bun is an easy way to re-invent the classic style for an edgier, more unique look that will have all eyes on you. Ready to learn how to achieve this look for yourself? SHAY MITCHELL: HER ACCESSORIZED CHIGNON AT THE 2016 TEEN CHOICE AWARDS
Pro-tip: for maximum texture and a style that's more easily achieved, try this look on hair that hasn't been freshly washed.
At the lower back of your head near your neck, take a section of hair about 10 centimetres wide, guiding the section from the bottom to the top of your head. Use a fine tooth comb to create a clean section without any fly-aways.
Starting from the bottom (at your neck), use the section of hair you've just compiled to create a French braid that moves from the bottom to top of your head. Integrate thin strands as you move up, and secure with an elastic once you've reached the crown of your head.
Pull the rest of your hair up into a high ponytail and integrate the tip of your French braid into the rest of the hair. Using your comb, gently back comb the hair to create more volume and texture.
Twist your ponytail around itself, then wrap it around the base of your ponytail to create a twisted chignon. Secure with bobby pins and an elastic.
Pull two small strands of hair out from around your ears on each side of your face for a more dishevelled look, then take a collection of small gold or silver hair accessory rings (you can use earrings as an alternative), and attach them along your French braid. Finish off with a generous amount of hairspray and you've achieved the perfect balance between an up-do and a braid!
