Sunday August 28th marks the 2016 Video Music Awards, a night that brings celebrities together to celebrate the music and pop culture of today. Not only does the night honour some of the best pop artists of our time, but it stands out as a celebration of quirk and nonconformity in the fashion and beauty departments, offering celebrities an occasion to let their hair down – or tie it up, as they please.
Who could forget Madonna's revolutionary 1984 performance of "Like a Virgin," inspiring a generation of bedhead's and brushed-up brows? Or Gwen Stefani's candy-blue bob and festive facial embellishments? Not long afterward, celebrities like Jennifer Lopez , Miley Cyrus and Shakira started the unofficial exposed midriff trend, while Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake took to the red carpet in 2001 wearing matching Canadian tuxedos.
Celebrities like Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus even went ahead and re-created some of these iconic looks in recent years, paying homage to the young celebs that came before them. And with Rihanna and Britney set to take the stage for this Sunday's show, there are sure to be more memorable looks (and performances) in the midst.
But before our favourite celebs set out to shock and delight us, we're looking back at some of the best VMA beauty moments of all time.
BEST VMA BEAUTY MOMENTS
TAYLOR SWIFT'S GRAPHIC LINER
From negative space liner to the grungy smudged effect, graphic eyes have quickly become one of fall's most prominent beauty trends. But before designers showcased various dark eyed looks on models at their 2016/16 runway shows, Taylor Swift was one step ahead of the trend, opting for an all-around graphic liner look for her appearance at the 2015 VMAs.
The singer wore a graphic cat eye that extended from the inner corners of her eyes to the outer corners, and all the way around the upper and lower lids. For added drama, she accentuated it with a hint of glitter.
BEYONCE'S BROWN LIPSTICK
While brown lipstick may be one of this year's best throwback trends, back then, it was the makeup trend of choice among stars like Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. At the 2001 Video Music Awards, Destiny's Child made a statement on the red carpet wearing matching suede, orange ensembles, glossy brown lipstick and a heavily contoured complexion – two trends we're still on board with today!
MILEY'S TWIN TOP-KNOTS
Of late, supermodels and celebs like Josephine Skriver and Ciara have been bringing back a popular '90s hair trend: twin top-knots. But since the '90s, the trend resurfaced in the form of two tightly knotted buns atop Miley Cyrus' hair at the 2013 Video Music Awards. Who said short haired gals couldn't rock this style? Rather than sticking with this season's tousled and volumized buns, try Miley's tightly wound version for an edgier appeal.
J-LO'S GLAM SMOKY EYE
Is there ever a time when Jennifer Lopez looks anything but glamorous? For her appearance at the 2015 Video Music Awards, J-Lo opted for a silver smoky eye that complimented her shiny sequin cut-out gown. But not just any old smoky eye, of course. The singer strayed away from the bold smoky eye norm and opted for nothing more than a little light silver shadow and a thin swipe of mascara. She finished her look off with a nude lip for a soft, yet glamorous red carpet look!
BRITNEY'S RAINBOW LOCKS
Is there any look Britney Spears can't rock? After accessorizing with a python and sporting a Canadian tuxedo dress alongside boyfriend of the moment Justin Timberlake, Britney continued to keep her VMA appearances interesting, showcasing a high ponytail in platinum blonde, turquoise and purple. We can't wait to see what she'll bring to the table for this year's VMA performance!
