Nelly Furtado is a Canadian singer, songwriter and actress. Her parents emigrated from Sao Miguel Island in the 1960s. At only four years old, Nelly began performing and singing in Portuguese, and started playing instruments at nine, going on to master the trombone, ukelele, guitar and keyboard.
At 18 years old, Nelly was spotted by the manager of the Philosopher Kings, a funk/pop group during a talent show. After working with them, she eventually landed a record contract with DreamWorks Records.
During her career to date she has sold more than 40 million records. Her debut album "Woah, Nelly!" which included two of her most successful singles "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn off the Light" won a Grammy and a Juno award. Other hit songs include "Promiscuous" (2006) and "Say it Right" (2007.) She has also released a Spanish album "Mi Plan" which won her a Latin Grammy. She has collaborated with artists such as Chris Martin, Juanes and Timbaland, and now has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.
Nelly has a daughter, Nevis, with DJ Jasper Gahunia who she stayed with until 2005. In 2007 she announced her engagement to Demacio "Demo" Castellón, a sound engineer. They married in 2008.
